THIS FAMILY DISPUTE WENT ALL THE WAY TO JUDGE JUDY!

A Canceled Cruise Leads to a Courtroom Battle

Imagine a mother and daughter in court.

The dispute is over a canceled family trip.

The plaintiff is Karen Martell.

She is suing her daughter, Cassandra Martell.

The Trip to the Caribbean

Karen Martell planned a trip.

It was for her two daughters.

The trip was to celebrate her younger daughter's junior high graduation.

It was a cruise to the Caribbean.

Cassandra Martell was to make the arrangements.

She was more experienced with travel planning.

Karen Martell gave Cassandra money for the trip.

It was for tickets and airfare.

The Money for the Trip

Karen Martell gave Cassandra a total of $1650.

This money was for a deposit and airfare.

Cassandra said her mother gave her money in May of 2017.

The trip was scheduled for January of 2018.

The money was given in separate amounts.

There were a few months between payments.

The Trip Is Canceled

Karen Martell changed her mind about the trip.

This happened around August.

Cassandra explained that her mother was trying to get the younger sister's father to sign for a passport.

He was not cooperating.

Cassandra suggested her mother go to the courthouse.

She could get proof of sole custody.

Karen Martell never did this.

Between the passport issue and other factors, Karen Martell lost interest.

The Refund

Cassandra Martell was able to get a refund for the trip.

She requested it.

She received it.

Cassandra did not give the refund money to her mother.

Karen Martell is suing for this money.

Cassandra's Explanation

Cassandra claimed her mother told her she could keep the money.

She said this happened between August and October.

Her mother changed her mind multiple times.

First, she said Cassandra could keep it.

Then she wanted some back.

Then she said Cassandra could keep it again.

Cassandra received the refund in October.

By that time, she had made other plans.

She had another trip planned.

She used the money for a trip in November.

Judge Judy Asks for Proof

Judge Judy asked Cassandra for proof.

Did her mother say she could keep the money?

Cassandra admitted she had no proof.

When the Arguments Started

Cassandra said arguments about the money began after she received the refund.

She did not save evidence.

She did not think her mother would change her mind.

She did not expect her mother to ask for the refund again.

Judge Judy asked what changed her mother's mind.

Cassandra said her mother wanted to plan something else.

It was for her sister.

She wanted to plan a new party.

She also wanted a domestic trip within the country.

Her mother asked for some of the money back.

Cassandra said her mother asked for the money back after October.

This was after Cassandra received the refund.

The Bank Statement

Judge Judy asked Cassandra for proof of her other trip.

She wanted to see when it was booked.

Cassandra presented a bank statement.

Judge Judy questioned the statement.

It was printed from online banking.

It was a search for "Royal Caribbean."

Judge Judy called it a "shortcut version."

It was not a full bank statement.

The refund came in on October 10.

The Next Trip

Judge Judy asked to see when Cassandra booked her next trip.

Cassandra showed evidence of a trip booked in late November.

This was over a month after the refund.

Cassandra stated she did not use all the money right away.

Karen Martell's Side

Judge Judy asked Karen Martell when Cassandra told her about the refund.

Karen Martell said Cassandra never explicitly told her she received it.

Cassandra said it would be in her bank account within a couple of days.

Karen Martell asked for the money back around the end of September.

She told Cassandra she could not go on the trip.

She wanted her money back.

She wanted to take her younger daughter on a domestic vacation.

This would not require a passport.

Karen Martell said Cassandra was "okay with it."

The Lack of Communication

Karen Martell explained why she was in court.

It had been nine months.

She had been trying to get her money back.

Cassandra had been avoiding her.

They live across the street from each other.

Karen Martell said she calls Cassandra.

Cassandra has her blocked.

There has been no communication.

Karen Martell mentioned Cassandra went on another cruise.

This was with her aunt.

Karen Martell tried to get the money before that trip.

She never heard from Cassandra.

Karen Martell had text messages asking for the money.

Judge Judy's Decision

Judge Judy found the situation "very unfortunate."

She noted the amount was $1650.
