THIS EXCUSE DID NOT GO WELL IN COURT!

A Sister's Identity Allegedly Stolen

Imagine your own sister using your name during an arrest.

That is the claim brought before Judge Judy.

The Plaintiff Seeks Justice

Ms. Hacksen is the plaintiff.

She claims her sister, Veda, used her identity.

This happened during an arrest in March 2016.

Ms. Hacksen says it affected her credit.

Her career in law enforcement was jeopardized.

She also accumulated fines and tickets.

The Defendant's History of Deception

Judge Judy asks about the ticket.

It is dated March 8, 2016.

The ticket is signed with Ms. Hacksen's name.

The offense is possession of drug paraphernalia.

Judge Judy asks Ms. Hacksen for proof of her whereabouts that day.

Ms. Hacksen says she doesn't clearly remember.

She initially claims she was in prison most of 2016.

Judge Judy asks for her confinement dates.

Ms. Hacksen states she was incarcerated from September 21, 2015, to March 16, 2016.

Judge Judy points out that if she was in jail until March 15, it couldn't have been her.

Ms. Hacksen seems confused by her own dates.

Judge Judy clarifies that Ms. Hacksen was arrested on March 16, 2016.

This means she was not in custody on March 8, 2016.

The prison alibi is out the window.

Now, Ms. Hacksen must convince Judge Judy it was her sister.

A Pattern of Using False Names

Ms. Hacksen presents evidence.

She has proof of Veda using four false names.

Judge Judy reviews the documents.

She confronts Veda about her history.

"Why do you do that?"

Judge Judy asks.

Veda tries to explain.

She says she feels like an easy target.

Judge Judy cuts her off.

"I don't care what you feel," Judge Judy states.

She repeats her question.

"Why do you use other people's names and identities when you're arrested?"

Veda admits to using drugs.

She says she wasn't in the right state of mind.

Veda claims she has been clean and sober for three years.

Judge Judy Challenges the Sobriety Claim

Judge Judy points out another arrest.

Veda was arrested again in 2017.

Veda explains it was a citation at her job.

She was in training.

She got in trouble for selling cigarettes without ID.

Judge Judy summarizes Veda's history.

First, the drug paraphernalia arrest in March 2016.

Second, a history of using other people's names.

Veda used the excuse of being on drugs.

Judge Judy acknowledges Veda's claim of sobriety.

But she emphasizes the past behavior.

"She has a history of using somebody else's name," Judge Judy says.

Definitive Proof of Innocence

Ms. Hacksen offers more evidence.

She has proof she was in school.

Judge Judy wants to see it.

Ms. Hacksen presents a letter from her counselor.

She also shows her school history.

It is highlighted on the third page.

This confirms Ms. Hacksen was in school.

"Okay, so now I know it wasn't you," Judge Judy declares.

The focus is now entirely on Veda.

Damning Evidence: Text Messages and a Recording

Ms. Hacksen has text messages.

She says Veda is not denying the accusation in them.

She also has a recording.

In the recording, Veda states she would pay for the ticket.

Judge Judy wants to hear it.

The recording plays.

A bill for $400 from South Dakota is mentioned.

Veda's voice is heard.

She says she will call and ask about the record.

She threatens to tell them it was Ms. Hacksen.

Ms. Hacksen's voice is heard.

She tells Veda not to say it was her.

Veda insists Ms. Hacksen should confess.

Ms. Hacksen says they can't do anything about it.

Veda questions this.

Ms. Hacksen says she won't be charged.

The Aftermath of the Identity Theft

Judge Judy asks Ms. Hacksen how she found out.

Ms. Hacksen received a letter in the mail.

It stated she owed $324.

She has multiple such letters.

Judge Judy asks if she paid them.

Ms. Hacksen says she did not.

She explains it wasn't her.

She consulted with someone about expunging it.

She would need to work with someone licensed in South Dakota.

Judge Judy indicates they can help with that.
