YOU WON'T BELIEVE WHAT HE TOLD JUDGE JUDY!
A Teenage Engagement and Legal Fees Land in Court
Imagine being 15 and engaged.
Now imagine that engagement ending up in Judge Judy's courtroom.
This case brings together two young parents and their families.

The Plaintiff Seeks Justice
Tyler is the plaintiff.
He is 17 years old.
His father, Mr. Brown, stands with him.
Tyler is suing his former fiancée, Mary.
Mary is 18 years old.
Her mother, Ms. Brows, is also present.
Tyler is seeking the return of an engagement ring.
He also wants reimbursement for legal fees.
These fees, he claims, were incurred due to Mary's actions.

The Engagement Ring and a Baby
Judge Judy asks about the engagement.
Tyler and Mary were 15 and 16 when they got engaged.
Judge Judy asks if their parents approved.
Mary says no.
Tyler insists her parents did approve.
He claims Mary's mother encouraged the marriage.
This was because Mary was pregnant.
They intended to stay together.
Judge Judy then asks about the ring.
She wants to know where it is.
Mary states she lost it.
Judge Judy calls this "baloney."
She asks when Tyler gave Mary the ring.
It was a few weeks after Mary told him she was pregnant.
Tyler has a receipt for the ring.
It was purchased at Walmart for $239.

The Legal Fees for Adoption
Tyler explains the first set of legal fees.
Mary decided she didn't want to be a mom.
She wanted to give their baby up for adoption.
Tyler's mother took out a loan.
This loan was to fight for custody of their son.
However, Mary changed her mind.
She called Tyler a day before going into labor.
She wanted to come back.
Tyler agreed.
They kept the loan money.
They used it for baby supplies instead of attorney fees.
Judge Judy asks how much they paid the lawyer.
Tyler admits he never actually retained the lawyer.

The Grandparent Visitation Lawsuit
Tyler then explains a second set of legal fees.
After their son was born, Mary lived with Tyler's parents.
Mary's parents filed for grandparent visitation rights.
Tyler and Mary did not like this idea.
They decided to fight it.
They retained an attorney.
They got another loan for this attorney.
The attorney filed a response to the petition.
Judge Judy asks what happened with the lawsuit.
Tyler says they were never notified of the hearing.
The judge granted the petition by default.
Their attorney never showed up.
Judge Judy asks how much they paid this attorney.
Tyler states they paid $525.

Mary's Side of the Story
Judge Judy turns to Mary.
She asks about the engagement ring.
Mary says she doesn't know where it is.
She claims it fell off while she was water skiing.
Judge Judy asks about the legal fees for fighting her parents.
Mary confirms they decided to fight it.
Judge Judy asks why.
Mary says she doesn't know anymore.
She admits she made a mistake.
She panicked because she was 15 and pregnant.

Child Support and Judge Judy's Rebuke
Judge Judy asks Mary about her current living situation.
Mary lives on her own.
She works full-time.
Tyler watches their son during the day.
Tyler says he works too.
His mother watches the baby when he goes to work.
Mary mentions that Tyler was supposed to pay child support.
She says she hasn't seen any money.
Judge Judy explains that Tyler is not legally responsible for child support until he is 18.
She notes that if she were queen, she would change that law.

The Verdict on the Ring and Fees
Judge Judy addresses the engagement ring.
She explains that an engagement ring is part of a contract to marry.
However, minors cannot enter into a contract.
Therefore, the Walmart ring is "gone."
She then considers the legal fees.
She finds merit in Tyler's argument for half of the attorney's fees.
Mary also agreed to fight the grandparent visitation.
Judge Judy's mathematician calculates half of $525.
The amount is $262.50.

Judge Judy's Child Support Lecture
Tyler tries to add something.
He mentions the child support issue.
He says he just got the court order.
His wages will be garnished this week.
Judge Judy is not pleased.
She tells Tyler he always says "one thing too much."
She asks if he needed an order to pay child support.
Their child is almost two years old.
She asks what he thought his baby was going to eat.
Tyler says he helped out.
He bought diapers.
He babysat.
Judge Judy states that if you're old enough to make a baby, you're old enough to support one.
She says you don't wait for a court order.
She dismisses his attorney's advice.
Morality, she says, has nothing to do with what an attorney tells you.
She tells him he should have voluntarily paid child support.
Tyler agrees that this has a "ring of truth to it."
Judge Judy awards $262.50 to the plaintiff.
She tells Tyler his excuse is over.
