YOU WON'T BELIEVE WHAT HE TOLD JUDGE JUDY!
A Family Car Dispute Leads to Garnished Wages
Imagine your wages garnished for a debt you believe isn't yours.
That is the situation Kristen Berger found herself in.
She is suing her father, Joe Berger.

The Plaintiff's Claim: A Father's Responsibility
Kristen Berger, the plaintiff, explains her side.
She claims her father bought her a car when she was 19.
She states he was responsible for paying it off.
Years later, a judgment accrued because the car was not paid off.
Over $8,000 was taken from her bank account.
She is now 27, has finished college, and owns her own home.

The Defendant's Defense: A Different Deal
Joe Berger, the defendant and Kristen's father, presents his version.
He claims he put down the down payment.
He says Kristen was supposed to pay for the car.
Judge Judy asks about his children.
He has two children.
His son is around 30.
His daughter, Kristen, is 27.
She has a master's degree.
She owns her own home.

Who Went Car Shopping?
Judge Judy asks who went shopping for the car.
Joe Berger states he and his wife did.
They found the car together.
They sent a picture to Kristen.
She agreed to it.
The car was over $6,000.
Joe Berger confirms he put down the down payment.

The Problematic Car and Failed Return
The car did not run well.
Joe Berger tried to return it.
The dealer refused to give his money back.
They said it would be a default.
Joe Berger told them he just wanted to return the car.
He did not want a car that was not running right.
The dealer refused to take it back.
This happened eight years ago.

What Happened to the Car?
Judge Judy asks what Joe Berger did with the car.
He says he didn't do anything with it.
He thought Kristen drove it for a semester.
He tried to return it when she came home for the summer.
He then states the car was parked in her aunt's backyard.
Judge Judy asks who parked it there.
Joe Berger says, "I guess she did, I really don't know."

Kristen Berger Clarifies the Car's Journey
Kristen Berger steps in to explain.
The car was towed from Florida by her godfather.
It was towed to her mother's house.
His ex-wife was given the vehicle to drive.
This was while Kristen went back to school.
The car broke down on the ex-wife.
They had to tow it from her house.
It was towed back to Kristen's mother's house.
It started leaking oil in her mother's driveway.
Her mother wanted it removed.
So, they put it in her aunt's backyard.
The car is still there.
It has been there for seven years.

The Car's Title and Joe Berger's Claims
Judge Judy asks about the car's title.
Joe Berger presents the registration.
He does not have the title.
He says there is a lien on it.
He claims he would receive the title once all monies were processed.
He states they got his money.
He has a bank statement.
Money was put on hold on April 22nd.
By May 6th, they had to respond.
He claims he owes the full $8,400, which includes interest.

The Lawyer and the Settlement
Joe Berger states he got a lawyer.
He hired the lawyer on April 23rd.
The lawyer's name is Craig.
He has a copy of his retainer agreement.
His lawyer is attempting to negotiate the loan.
He says the settlement is open.
He will sign papers when he returns home.
He claims they settled for $5,000.
Judge Judy asks to see proof.
He shows an email on his phone.
It is from his lawyer, forwarded from the opposing lawyer, Samai.

Judge Judy's Calculation
Judge Judy confirms the $5,000 settlement for the car.
She states that between Joe Berger and Kristen Berger, that is $2,500 apiece.
Joe Berger paid his lawyer $1,000.
This means he is stuck with $3,000.
This includes $2,500 for his half of the loan.
It also includes $500 for the lawyer.
